The IT Productivity Gap

The link between corporate performance and IT investment remains elusive. Organizations have invested heavily in enterpise wide systems that have in many cases yielded lukewarm results. Some companies have found that while their systems have sped up the processing of information, "logjams" exist in the dissemination of this information. This usually arises when human workers are involved as part of a misaligned or outdated business process. Brynjolfsson argues that without larger organizational changes, IT gains won't measure up. The most successful organizations recognize that IT innovation has to be accompanied by investments in better work practices -- the "digital organization" -- in order to close the IT productivity gap.<more>
